Oberto Oberti, President

Background and education:

Oberto Oberti, B. Arch., M. Arch., MRAIC, MAIBC, past AAA, OAA, Ordre des architectes du Quebec, CP of the City of Vancouver, NCARB, is President of both Pheidias Project Management Corporation and of Oberto Oberti Architecture & Urban Design Inc., both founded in 1976. Since then, his company group has been providing leadership in planning, design, construction and development management, including the production of unique projects in a wide range of development areas in Canada and the United States. Mr. Oberti‘s education was formed in Italy and in Canada, he travelled extensively and practiced most sports, particularly skiing in the Alps.

Mr. Oberti has been the chair of the Housing Committee and of the Urban Design Panel Committee and a Council Member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia. He was a member of the Development Committee of UBC Realty Inc. (the former University of British Columbia Real Estate Corporation) which developed Hampton Place on the UBC Endowment Lands. He also taught the Building Code of the City of Vancouver for the Certified Professional Program at the University of British Columbia Continuing Education Program for nine years.

Awards and recognition:

In addition to being awarded twelve Georgie Awards over many years, Mr. Oberti’s companies have received the Gold Heritage Award from the City of Vancouver as well as the Royal City Builders Award of Merit from the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Oberti is also a recipient of the Ethno Business Council of BC New Canadian Entrepreneur Service Award for “Operating Success, Overcoming Challenges, and Community Involvement.” Mr. Oberti’s architectural firm’s work was recognized also by the City of Montreal with the heritage prize for the Birks building at Phillips Square.

Oberto Oberti has been asked to deliver numerous speeches and lectures since the 1980’s to many Universities, Colleges, Associations and Service Clubs. Numerous articles on Mr. Oberti, his Companies and his work have been published in newspapers and magazines, in Canada and overseas, including the Globe and Mail, the National Post, the Corriere della Sera (Milan, Italy), and the New York Times. His design of a private West Vancouver waterfront home was featured on an episode of HGTV’s “Dream Builders” in the United States.

He has written a number of articles and papers. His paper on project management was published and presented at the International Conference on Contract Management in the Construction Industry held in Singapore in November 1999.

Glenn C. Ledingham, Senior Vice-President

Glenn Ledingham Architect AIBC, B.Sc., is Senior Vice-President of Oberto Oberti Architecture and Urban Design Inc. and of Pheidias Project Management Corporation. He is a native of Saskatchewan and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He is has been a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia, of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta, and is a member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia. He has been a Certified Professional (a program of professional certification of building code compliance) for the City of Vancouver.

Glenn Ledingham worked for a major homebuilder in Calgary, Kelwood Corporation, a Division of Keith Construction Company Ltd. as a project manager on major development projects before joining the planning, design and project management team of the Pheidias Group in 1984. He began overseeing field services and gained a position as a senior designer and planner in the design team, utilizing his knowledge of construction and engineering as well as of architectural design. He is a building code expert and has directed major projects ranging from site developments to high-rise construction as a construction manager. He has directed design teams and construction crews for projects ranging from individual buildings and Interiors of high end stores to major developments from residential to institutional and has been the lead designer for a large number of the award winning buildings designed by the company group.

Kate Chan, CPA – CGA, B.Comm

Comptroller

Ms. Chan is a Certified Public Accountant – Certified General Accountant. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in accounting. Ms. Chan worked for more than five years as auditor for a national property management company where she acquired substantial knowledge and management skills about property management. This was one of the largest clients of Doane Raymond Pannell, Chartered Accountants in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ms. Chan was heavily involved in supervising audits, including reviewing and performing examinations on internal controls and recommending improvements to the clients. She also reviewed special purposes financial statements for investors for tax purposes.

Following her move to Vancouver, B.C., Ms. Chan obtained her CGA designation.  She then joined one of the largest retail fabric companies in Canada and assumed the position of comptroller managing all aspects of financial management and accounting. One of her responsibilities was to manage the leases for twenty-one retail locations in B.C.

Ms. Chan has been involved in property management for approximately ten years and has expanded her interests to the development industry since joining Pheidias Project Management Corporation in 1995 as the Corporate Comptroller in charge of accounting for the Company Group and their development clients.

Tommaso Oberti, Vice President

Tommaso (Tom) Oberti is Vice President of Oberto Oberti Architecture and Urban Design Inc., and the Pheidias Group. His wide-ranging educational background encompasses classical history, English literature, technical writing, computer programming, graphic design, marketing, architecture, environmental studies, and business management. He is completing an MBA and is in the process of becoming a registered architect.

Prior to joining the Pheidias Group, he worked in Zurich, Switzerland for the Kunsthaus Zurich (museum of modern art) and the Union Bank of Switzerland. He also worked in Turin, Italy in a marketing capacity for a top investment bank.

In 2002 he joined the Pheidias Group, and his multidisciplinary background soon made him a key planner and designer for the most complex projects of the company. He became a key contributor and organizer of the company’s resort project that won an environmental certificate in 2004, and a Master Plan approval in 2007, the first combined approvals for this kind of project in the Province. He also became the be key communicator of design concepts and manager of major development approval processes.

Tom directed the multidisciplinary planning teams that designed and obtained approvals for the expansion of Kiciking Horse Mountain resort, for the Crystal Mountain Master Plan, and for new village of Valemount Glacier Destinations.

He has prepared preliminary design and applications for rezoning and development permit processes for several urban projects, preparing the ground for successful urban developments.  Tom is very active in the community and has been President of Junior Hockey League of West Vancouver for the last ten years, winning several community awards.

Michael Vaughan

Architect AIBC, B.Arch. (U.B.C.); M.A. (Urban Design) (U. Manchester); Juris Doctor (U. Victoria); MCIP, Registered Professional Planner; Retired Lawyer

Michael Vaughan is an architect and planner, who had also practiced for many years as a municipal and land use lawyer. Prior to studying architecture at the UBC School of Architecture, he studied engineering and science at university and worked summers with engineering offices including the National Harbors Board and Transport Canada. He completed his architecture degree in 1972 and since then has worked with several firms in Vancouver, including Oberti Architecture. He also practiced architecture in Hong Kong and the Caribbean as a past member of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects. He joined the AIBC in 1981 and began work as a Planner with the City of Vancouver in 1982. From 1989 to 1992 he worked with the law firm of Alexander Holburn Beaudin & Lang, principally in the areas of municipal law, land use law and commercial litigation. He then joined the District of Sechelt as a manager, during the time of construction of two major new sewer lines and a new municipal hall and library there. In 1997 he rejoined Oberti Architecture and the Pheidias Group to help plan, document and get approvals for Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, which was approved, started construction and opened in 2000. He then joined Owen Bird Law Corporation to practice municipal and land use development law. He also taught municipal law for 20 continuous years at Capilano University from 1995 to 2015. In 2017 he again rejoined Oberto Oberti Architecture and Urban Design and thePheidias Group and continues to enjoy work on a variety of major urban and resort projects.
